Get Your Unique Location Code: DIGIPIN by Indian Post
The Department of Posts has undertaken an initiative to establish a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for a standardized, geo-coded addressing system in India. As a part of this initiative, The Department has finalised DIGIPIN – the foundation layer of the DPI. This initiative seeks to provide simplified addressing solutions for seamless delivery of public and private services and to enable “Address as a Service” (AaaS) across the country. DIGIPIN is an open-source national level addressing grid developed by Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO and is a key component of the digital address ecosystem. The advent of DIGIPIN will mark a revolutionary step in India's journey towards digital transformation by bridging the crucial gap between physical locations and their digital representation.
DIGIPIN is not a personal identity for any individual, any house, or any place. It is automatically assigned based on the location of a specific place. As a user, you don’t have any control over editing, deleting, or changing the DIGIPIN, just like your PIN code.

DIGIPIN, short for Digital Postal Index Number, is a 10-letter alphanumeric code assigned to a specific 4m x 4m area. Unlike PIN codes, which are assigned and cover large areas, DIGIPIN pinpoints a precise area like a house, shop, or school.
Each DIGIPIN assigned to a specific place is unique, similar to an Aadhaar Card. To put it simply, instead of your complete address of a specific place, you can input your DIGIPIN to specify your exact location. Moreover, unlike your city or your street name, DIGIPIN never changes.
Also, compared to PIN codes or your home address, you can share the DIGIPIN without any additional details, such as your phone number. This makes it easy to find an exact location, which can be helpful for delivery people, and also for your friends or someone finding your exact address.
How to Get Your DIGIPIN?
Since DIGIPIN is not an identity, you don’t need to register or apply for your DIGIPIN. It is automatically assigned based on your location. To find your DIGIPIN, you can go DIGIPIN portal by India Post and find the code.
To get your DIGIPIN, go to https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home and allow location access.
Here you can find your DIGIPIN and DIGIPIN for other locations.
Click on the search option and enter the longitude and latitude of the specific location. You can find this in Google or Apple Maps.
You can only use DIGIPIN using the Indian Post website. As of the writing of this post, neither Apple Maps nor Google Maps supports DIGIPIN.
Google also offers similar features called plus codes, similar to DIGIPIN, which are available worldwide, including in India. However, DIGIPIN is specific to India, developed by the Indian government. In the future, DIGIPIN might become a standard since it is developed by the Indian government, whereas Google Maps can be completely optional since it is provided by a private entity, Google.
