India's Largest Mall on Mobile---ngpay.

What is ngpay?

ngpay is India's largest mall - located entirely on a user's mobile handset.

You can use ngpay to buy air & rail tickets, bank, pay your bills, buy movie tickets, shop for books & gifts, transfer funds, make payments and more from your mobile phone in a fast, simple and secure fashion. Its free and takes just minutes to download and register.

ngpay offers a range of services from its network of partners. In a simple, consolidated menu, you can discover and choose merchants, banks, or service providers with whom you want to transact.

ngpay will continue to tie up with more Partners to meet your everyday needs. For your convenience, the updated list of Partners will be always available to you on ngpay on your mobile phone. You are also encouraged to recommend a Partner from the "Contact Us" page of our website
Shop, Buy Tickets, Recharge, Pay Bills, Bank and more - easily and securely - from your mobile handset.

How safe is it?

ngpay transactions offer security levels similar to ATM transactions. Once you become a ngpay user, for your security you will need to enter your unique 6-digit PIN every time you make a payment transaction. This PIN number is NOT stored on your handset, so hacking your stolen handset will not put you at risk.

ngpay's Mobile Wallet is a tamper-proof digital wallet on your phone and it stores your Bank account/Credit card details in an encrypted form. Even if you lose your phone, unauthorized users cannot access ngpay or your payment/banking transactions without your unique ngpay PIN. What’s more, you can simply call ngpay Customer Care @ +91 80 67004000 or SMS to +91 99009 06677, to block ngpay on your phone.

ngpay respects your privacy. ngpay does not store your card / bank information on its servers, neither do we share your personal information with any third party - other than those ngpay Partners that you have selected to use. These Partners may contact you directly for service related issues.

If your mobile turns off or loses connection during a transaction due to either low battery charge or bad connectivity, rest assured that your credit card will not be debited. Charges are debited to your credit card only on the successful completion of a payment transaction.

For the technically - minded....

ngpay provides 128-bit end-to-end financial grade security from the user’s handset through to the application servers. It uses an innovative approach based on the concept of application layer security and has been independently certified for financial transactions by leading security firms and financial institutions.

How much does ngpay cost?

ngpay is FREE! There are no charges for the download, registration and use of ngpay.

ngpay works on most JAVA enabled phones (any phone priced over Rs.2000 will safely support ngpay). All you need to do is activate GPRS with your mobile operator.

Most operators offer a free GPRS plan with no monthly rentals... you only pay for what you use. Customers can complete a transaction by spending only a few paise in data usage charges. Call your mobile operator to know more.

With ngpay, you only pay for the price of the product or service as charged by the ngpay partner. For some services, ngpay might charge a small convenience fee, which would be clearly mentioned on the Confirm Payment screen.

Download ngpay - Once.

SMS “ngpay” to 56767 or enter your mobile number in the box on the right. You will receive a SMS from ngpay containing a link to download the application. Select the link and follow the instructions to download and install.

UIDAI to start issuing identification numbers in Feb '11

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) said on Thursday that it would start issuing the 16-digit number to each resident of the country in February 2011.

We would start issuing the unique identification numbers (UIN) in February 2011. These numbers would be allotted on the basis of 11 biometrics including 10 fingerprints and iris, UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani said here after a meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The UIDAI would not allot any card, but 16-digit numbers, said Nilekani, who is on a visit to the state to discuss the UIN issue.

There would be eight regional offices of UIDAI and each such office would cover two-three states, he said.

Meanwhile, Hooda assured all help of the state government to the UIDAI and said the state level unit would function under financial commissioner and principal secretary (tourism) Keshni Anand Arora to allot UIN to Haryana residents.

Hundred times faster, cooler computers on their way

Indian-origin researcher Sanjeev John and his colleague Xun Ma of the University of Toronto have discovered new behaviour of light which could lead to cooler and faster computing.

The two quantum optics researchers have discovered 'new behaviours' of light changes within photonic crystals that could lead to faster optical information processing and compact computers that don't overheat.

"We discovered that by sculpting a unique artificial vacuum inside a photonic crystal, we can completely control the electronic state of artificial atoms (light) within the vacuum," lead author Xun Ma was quoted as saying in a statement here Tuesday.

"This discovery can enable photonic computers that are more than a hundred times faster than their electronic counterparts, without heat dissipation issues and other bottlenecks currently faced by electronic computing," said Ma.

Added Sanjeev John, "We designed a vacuum in which light passes through circuit paths that are one one-hundredth of the thickness of a human hair, and whose character changes drastically and abruptly with the wavelength of the light."

"A vacuum experienced by light is not completely empty, and can be made even emptier. It's not the traditional understanding of a vacuum."

Ma said, "In this vacuum, the state of each atom - or quantum dot - can be manipulated with color-coded streams of laser pulses that sequentially excite and de-excite it in trillionths of a second. These quantum dots can in turn control other streams of optical pulses, enabling optical information processing and computing."

The researchers, whose original aim was to gain a deeper understanding of optical switching as part of an effort to develop an all-optical micro-transistor that could operate within a photonic chip, ended up discovering a new and unexpected dynamic switching mechanism.

Their research also led to the discovery of corrections to one of the most fundamental equations of quantum optics, known as the Bloch equation.

Said John, "This new mechanism enables micrometer scale integrated all-optical transistors to perform logic operations over multiple frequency channels in trillionths of a second at microwatt power levels, which are about one millionth of the power required by a household light bulb. That this mechanism allows for computing over many wavelengths as opposed to electronic circuits which use only one channel, would significantly surpass the performance of current day electronic transistors."

India has 500 million mobile phone numbers......by JAN 2010

By the start of the New Year, India will have breached a previously unthinkable landmarkhalf a billion wireless connections — making it the second largest group of mobile phone users after China.

Overall, telephone connections in India (fixed line and wireless) will be closing in on 550 million by the time you read this. This translates into a teledensity (phone connections per 100 population) of roughly 45%, an urban teledensity closer to 97% and a rural teledensity of about 18%.

India had crossed 488.40 million wireless connections at the end of October 2009 and will be breaching the half-billion wireless connections mark just about now. Yet, the actual number of subscribers might be less than half a billion, since a few hold multiple SIM cards and not all of them are in use at the same time.

In sharp contrast, wireline connectivity is down to 37.25 million phones, exhibiting a clear consumer preference for wireless, including mobile phones, as a preferred technology for voice and data communications. India’s broadband penetration, however, is abysmally low at 7.5 million — a consequence, say telecom experts, of policy failure, partly due to the declining use of wireline phones.

India’s telephony growth is remarkable despite the fact that the last two years have been full of controversy and litigation, with government and industry divided on crucial issues like spectrum policy, tariffs and introduction of new competition.

India has 13 to 14 operators providing wireless connectivity — mostly mobile — in its 22 service areas. Of these, 8-9 companies are operational and another 5-6 are obligated to launch service to meet rollout obligations. Many of the new entrants who had bagged spectrum in January 2008 have been unable to get off the ground nearly two years after receiving licences.

Latest Software Development Methodologies – Funny but True!

If you are a software professional, you would have come across various software development models / frameworks – such as Waterfall, Spiral, Agile, SCRUM, Extreme Programming, Test Driven Development, etc.. There are some interesting ‘models’ which you would have experienced in your rojects, but forgot to call it with a name. Scott Berkun has posted a few such funny but well-known development models, and there are a few hundred comments added by software professionals from there experience. I have copied a few selected such methods. (Yeah! I am following the Copy Paste Blogging Model! LOL [via @Scobleizer]

Asshole Driven development (ADD) – Any team where the biggest jerk makes all the big decisions is asshole driven development. All wisdom, logic or process goes out the window when Mr. Asshole is in the room, doing whatever idiotic, selfish thing he thinks is best. There may rules and processes, but Mr. Asshole breaks them and people follow anyway.

Ass Licking Management (ALM) – This is the management which is ready to lick its employee’s ass to keep them in the company…Most of the time, these employees follow GMPM methodology by finishing the assignment with hacks.

Cover Your Ass Engineering (CYAE) – The driving force behind most individual efforts is to make sure than when the shit hits the fan, they are not to blame.

Get Me Promoted Methodology (GMPM) – People write code and design things to increase their visibility, satisfy their boss’s whims, and accelerate their path to a raise or the corner office no matter how far outside of stated goals their efforts go. This includes allowing disasters to happen so people can be heroes, writing hacks that look great in the short term but crumble after the individual has moved on, and focusing more on the surface of work than its value.

Not My Problem (NMP) / Musical Chairs Style Development – All complex, complicated, expensive, or otherwise troublesome decisions/features/issues are pushed into someone else’s module.

Shovel-Driven Development -Get it out the door as quickly as possible, cut-n-paste from anything that you find that works on Google, if it works it’s ready. Closely related to “Duct-tape Driven Design”

Blog Driven Development – Developers who are constantly thinking about the subject of their next blog post. Nearly every somewhat interesting line of code they write is extracted into a blog post.

Budget Driven Development (BDD) – The time that a project will take is dictated by how much the client will pay, instead of how long it will take to develop the application, generally leading to massively over-budget projects.DBC – Development By Crisis (Management By Crisis) – Everything is a Crisis. Every task, you have to “Drop everything” and work all night long! Woe to the developer that mentions that the user acceptance testing doesn’t even begin for another 2 months… Everything is a disaster.

Must Use Specific Technology Development (MUSTP) – IN many projects where someone (even sometimes a reasonably smart and technically savvy engineer) dictates that the solution “must” use a specific technology (EJBs, XML, OODBMS, OSI protocol, .NET, Smalltalk, etc.) “because it’s the future”. Of course, you end up shoe-horning the technology into places where it clearly doesn’t fit – or it’s too immature to use successfully and eventually everyone looks back and says: “why the hell did we do that?”

Blame it on the Developer (BD) – When the application fails due to oversights on the part of the project manager, the developer is blamed. The developer may have warned you that the application wasn’t ready for release, that components from other groups weren’t ready and tested, but it was released anyway. This is often a resume building moment for the developer.

I Was an Expert Once Syndrome (IWEOS) – senior-level people “contributing” because of their years of “expertise” that grant them the inalienable right to shit on every discussion, whine about everything out of their comfort zone and squeeze in every last “favorite” feature into the final product.

Client Wants It Anyway(CWI) – no matter how inane or unusable, just because the marketing teams wants it then it has to be in there. Usually an over-budget, non-spec’ed that will never be paid for – this way of developing is usually propagated by weak and ham-fisted Project Managers.

CRAP = Completely Redundant Application Process – You create the same application someone in your company, division, department, or cubicle has already created. But you either A) want to write your own, or B) had no idea someone else had done it.

Management By Panic (MP) methodology. Every management action is predicated by an “emergency” change. Usually executed in the absence of planning.

Just One More Feature Outside Schedule (JOMFOS) – Regardless how high the pressure, how tight the schedule, or how late the project – JOMFOS product managers can always find something strategic (read: we have to land this contract) and groundbreaking (read: this one customer think it is clever) that not only breaks the current design, but also has to be squeezed in before the unmoving (yeah, right)

Virtual Phone Numbers (1 Phone with 10 Numbers) in India by Airtel

Airtel, in association with Comviva, is planning to launch Virtual Phone Numbers in India. This technology enables subscribers to use upto 10 different numbers on a single phone. The software will be embedded in the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card itself. This is expected to be launched in another 2 months.

Comviva has already tied up with MTN of South Africa and launched the multiple SIM in Cameroon and has acquired 30,000 new users as a result.

The technology requires the user to dial a given number from the specific mobile phone and activate the SIM though a password. Once that is done, the user can receive and make calls and even recharge the account through a pre-paid coupon.

The technology dramatically reduces the cost of ownership for a mobile connection and would also be useful as community phones in villages. The cheapest branded mobile costs at least Rs 1,000

The service will be carrier-agnostic i.e. all customers can avail the mobile banking service with the Bank irrespective of the service provider for their mobiles.

The service is free of charge. However, the cost of SMS / GPRS connectivity will have to be borne by the customer.

You can download the Mobile App to your mobile phone or PC.

How to Download SBI Mobile Banking Application to your Mobile Handset

The Mobile Banking Application can be downloaded using
(i) Bluetooth
(ii) Datacable
Using Bluetooth
STEP I: Downloading the Mobile Banking Application from website

* On the website www.sbi.co.in click on Mobile Banking under Services. Click on ‘Download Mobile Banking Application’. You will be directed to a site for downloading the application.
* Choose your mobile make from the drop down options on the left side and then select your mobile model from the list displayed.
* You will get two options (i) Download application to PC (ii) Download application to mobile.
* If you have GPRS connectivity, choose the second option. You will receive a WAP link over SMS. You can download the application by clicking on the link.
* If you do not have GPRS connectivity, choose the first option to download the application to PC/laptop.
* The mobile banking application which is compatible with the model chosen by you will be saved on your PC.

STEP II: Download the Application from PC to mobile handset using Bluetooth

* Install the Bluetooth on the PC/ laptop, if not already available, using the CD provided by the manufacturer.
* Insert the Bluetooth dongle in the CPU. This works like a pendrive.
* Click on the Icon of Bluetooth on Desktop. A screen will open up.
* Please ensure the Bluetooth in your mobile is on and it is visible for other mobile devices.
* Click on My Bluetooth and choose Bluetooth Device Discovery.
* The mobiles which are in the vicinity of the computer having Bluetooth which is ON will be shown on the screen.
* Right click on the icon of the concerned mobile and choose Pair Device.
* A screen will open up asking for a Passkey. Enter any key of your choice.
* The message will be sent to the concerned mobile and the same key has to be entered there for pairing it with the computer.
* Right click on the mobile icon and choose Refresh Services. The service available for the mobile will be highlighted on the top of the screen.
* Choose Bluetooth Object Push Services and click the right button of the mouse and choose Send Object.
* In the window displayed under files of types at the bottom choose All Files.
* In the screen under Desktop you will find the file that was downloaded from website. It will be labeled SBIFreedom. Choose the same.
* The file will be sent to the chosen mobile. It has to be accepted by the recipient mobile and the file will be downloaded.

Another method of using Bluetooth is explained below

* Locate the SBIFreedom file on the computer and right-click the file icon. Select Send To -> Bluetooth and the mobile phone if it is displayed in the list.
* If the phone is not displayed in the list, select “Other…” -> a window titled “Select Device” appears.
* Select the phone in the list and click “OK”.
* Bluetooth file transfer begins.
* Note: If the computer has not been previously “paired” as a trusted device with the phone, this needs to be done by setting an arbitrary passkey on the phone and re-typing it on the computer to authenticate the file transfer.
* On the phone, a prompt may appear requiring authorization of the file transfer. Click “Yes” to receive the file. (This step is skipped if you have set you computer as a trusted device in the phone’s Bluetooth settings)
* A New Message Received indicates the file transfer is complete. Open the message to begin the installation process.
* Switch of the Bluetooth function in the mobile when it is not used as phones are susceptible to virus attacks.

Using Datacable

If your computer is not equipped with Bluetooth, it is possible to transfer the SBI Mobile Application you downloaded from www.sbi.co.in/mobilebanking to your phone over USB using the mobile manufacturer software which came with the mobile. For e.g. use Nokia PC Suite® software if you are using a Nokia mobile to transfer the SBI mobile application to your phone.
How to Register for “SBI Freedom” Mobile Banking Service

The registration process for Mobile Banking Service consists of two processes :
(i) Over mobile handset
(ii) At SBI ATM or at branch
Process over mobile handset
Step I

Send a SMS to 567676 (e.g.MBSREG Nokia 6600). You will get a User ID, default MPIN and a link by SMS which can be used to download the application if you have GPRS connectivity. If you have a non-java mobile phone with GPRS connection, you can use the Mobile Banking Service over WAP (explained under “WAP based Mobile Banking Service”). If you have a non java mobile phone without GPRS connection, you can use Mobile Banking Service over USSD which will be introduced by the Bank shortly.
Step II

If GPRS connectivity is not available, please do the following. Download the application on your PC by going to the website. After downloading, transfer application to your mobile using the data cable that was received along with the phone. If the phone and the PC have Bluetooth facility you can transfer the
application from the PC to the handset via the Bluetooth. If these are not feasible you may get assistance from the branch for installing the application on your
handset.
Step III

After installation of the application, please login using the User ID received in the SMS. The User ID is case sensitive and has to be entered as received over SMS. After opening the mobile banking application, you will be prompted to change the MPIN. If not prompted, please select “Settings” from Main Menu and choose “Change MPIN”. The default MPIN has to be entered in the “old MPIN” and a new MPIN of your choice (6 digits) in the “new MPIN” which has to be confirmed by entering the new MPIN once again in “Confirm new MPIN”. Send the request. You will receive the confirmation of change in MPIN over SMS. THE MPIN SHOULD HAVE SIX CHARACTERS ONLY.
Process at branch or SBI ATM

After completing the above process, you can complete the registration at the Home Branch of your account or at the nearest SBI ATM. AT the branch, fill up the required form which will be entered into the system and your account will be activated next day. At the ATM, after swiping the Debit Card, please choose the opt ion ‘Services’ and then select ‘Mobile Banking’. Under Mobile Banking, choose the option to ‘Register’, enter your mobile number and re-enter the number to confirm registration. You will receive a SMS regarding activation of your account. You can then use all the services offered under the Mobile Banking Services.
For using WAP based Mobile Banking Service.

The service will be available over all mobile phones (java / non java) which have GPRS connectivity for GSM users or data connectivity for CDMA users.

The registration process will be the same as for application based service i.e. in two phases – over mobile phone followed by process at ATM/ branch. The process over mobile phone, though essentially same as detailed above, will be done through the Browser of the mobile phone. The procedure is described below:

a) Send a SMS to 567676 (e.g.MBSREG Nokia 6600).

The user will open the browser again and follow the procedure detailed above to enter the Login id and default MPIN. The next screen will ask for WAP Login id. Enter the number received over SMS and select ‘Send’.
i) If details entered are correct, the next screen with the Main Menu of the Mobile Banking Service will be displayed.
j) Change the default MPIN by selecting “Settings” from Main Menu and choosing “Change MPIN”. The default MPIN has to be entered in the “old MPIN” and a new MPIN of your choice (6 digits) in the “new MPIN” which has to be confirmed by entering the new MPIN once again in “Confirm new MPIN” and submit.
k) Confirmation regarding successful change in MPIN and validation will be received over SMS and also displayed on the screen.
l) Complete the registration process by registering at Home branch of your account or at SBI ATM as described above under “Process at branch or SBI ATM”
Usage of Facilities under Mobile Banking Service

For using any of the facilities of Mobile Banking Service, the user has to follow steps from
(c) to (h) as described above. However, under step (f), the user has to enter the User ID and MPIN which has been changed to one of his choice. The Main Menu will be displayed after the WAP login id is entered and submitted. The usage of the facilities would be same as in application based Mobile Banking Service.

Google public DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Google announced that they have started offering public DNS servers as well. The system, called Google Public DNS, was designed to “make users’ web-surfing experiences faster, safer and more reliable”.

Google Public DNS is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider. Just configure your computer’s network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers to use this free reliable DNS service. Your client programs will perform all DNS lookups using Google Public DNS. By using Google Public DNS you can Speed up your browsing experience, improve your security.

The DNS protocol is an important part of the web’s infrastructure, serving as the Internet’s phone book. Eevery time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day.

The Internet Service Provider is usually the one that is providing the DNS servers to the customer. This happens more often than not automatically. There are however reasons to switch to other DNS servers with performance, privacy and censorship being three of the major reasons.

Configuring your network settings to use Google Public DNS

[source: google]

When you use Google Public DNS, you are changing your DNS “switchboard” operator from your ISP to Google Public DNS.

In most cases, the IP addresses used by your ISP’s domain name servers are automatically set by your ISP via the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). To use Google Public DNS, you need to explicitly change the DNS settings in your operating system or device to use the Google Public DNS IP addresses. The procedure for changing your DNS settings varies according to operating system and version (Windows, Mac or Linux) or the device (computer, phone, or router).
Google Public DNS IP addresses

The Google Public DNS IP addresses are as follows:

* 8.8.8.8
* 8.8.4.4

You can use either number as your primary or secondary DNS server. You can specify both numbers, but do not specify one number as both primary and secondary.
Changing your DNS servers settings

Many systems allow you to specify multiple DNS servers, to be contacted in a priority order. In the following instructions, steps are provided to specify only the Google Public DNS servers as the primary and secondary servers, to ensure that your setup will correctly use Google Public DNS in all cases. Depending on your network setup, you may need administrator/root privileges to change these settings.
Microsoft Windows

DNS settings are specified in the TCP/IP Properties window for the selected network connection.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Microsoft Windows Vista

1. Go the Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, then Manage network connections.
3. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
* To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties.
* To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and click Properties.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
5. Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.
6. Click OK.
7. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.
8. Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
9. Restart the connection you selected in step 3.
10. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.
11. Repeat the procedure for additional network connections you want to change.

Mac OS X

DNS settings are specified in the Network window.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Mac OS 10.5

1. From the Apple menu, click System Preferences, then click Network. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
* To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, select Built-In Ethernet, and click Advanced.
* To change the settings for a wireless connection, select Airport, and click Advanced.
3. Select the DNS tab.
4. Click + to replace any listed addresses with, or add, the Google IP addresses at the top of the list: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
5. Click Apply and OK.
6. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.
7. Repeat the procedure for additional network connections you want to change.

Linux

In most modern Linux distributions, DNS settings are configured through Network Manager.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on Ubuntu

1. In the System menu, click Preferences, then click Network Connections.
2. Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
* To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, select the Wired tab, then select your network interface in the list. It is usually called eth0.
* To change the settings for a wireless connection, select the Wireless tab, then select the appropriate wireless network.
3. Click Edit, and in the window that appears, select the IPv4 Settings tab.
4. If the selected method is Automatic (DHCP), open the dropdown and select Automatic (DHCP) addresses only instead. If the method is set to something else, do not change it.
5. In the DNS servers field, enter the Google Public DNS IP addresses, separated by a space: 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
6. Click Apply to save the change. If you are prompted for a password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
7. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.
8. Repeat the procedure for additional network connections you want to change.

If your distribution doesn’t use Network Manager, your DNS settings are specified in /etc/resolv.conf.

Example: Changing DNS server settings on a Debian server

1. Edit /etc/resolv.conf:

sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf

2. If any nameserver lines appear, write down the IP addresses for future reference.
3. Replace the nameserver lines with, or add, the following lines:

nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4

4. Save and exit.
5. Restart any Internet clients you are using.
6. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.

Additionally, if you are using DHCP client software that overwrites the settings in /etc/resolv.conf, you will need to set up the client accordingly by editing the client’s configuration file.

Example: Configuring DHCP client sofware on a Debian server

1. Back up /etc/resolv.conf:

sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.auto

2. Edit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf:

sudo vi /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

3. If there is a line containing domain-name-servers, write down the IP addresses for future reference.
4. Replace that line with, or add, the following line:

prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4;

5. Save and exit.
6. Restart any Internet clients you are using.
7. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settingsbelow.

Routers

To change your settings on a router:

1. In your browser, enter the IP address to access the router’s administration console.
2. When prompted, enter the password to access network settings.
3. Find the screen in which DNS server settings are specified.
4. If there are IP addresses specified in the fields for the primary and seconday DNS servers, write them down for future reference.
5. Replace those addresses with Google IP addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
6. Save and exit.
7. Restart your browser.
8. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settingsbelow.

Mobile or other devices

To change your settings on a mobile device:

1. Go to the screen in which wi-fi settings are specified.
2. Find the screen in which DNS server settings are specified.
3. If there are IP addresses specified in the fields for the primary and seconday DNS servers, write them down for future reference.
4. Replace those addresses with Google IP addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
5. Save and exit.
6. Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.

Testing your new settings

To test that the Google DNS resolver is working:

1. From your browser, type in a hostname, such as http://www.google.com. If it resolves correctly, bookmark the page, and try accessing the page from the bookmark. If both of these tests work, everything is working correctly. If not, go to step 2.
2. From your browser, type in a fixed IP address. You can use http://18.62.1.6/ (which points to the website http://eecs.mit.edu/) as the URL*. If this works correctly, bookmark the page, and try accessing the page from the bookmark. If these tests work (but step 1 fails), then there is a problem with your DNS configuration; check the steps above to make sure you have configured everything correctly. If these tests do not work, go to step 3.
3. Roll back the DNS changes you made and run the tests again. If the tests still do not work, then there is a problem with your network settings; contact your ISP or network administrator for assistance.

New orkut is here....Orkut new look

The orkut team has been working hard on building a new, fast and exciting experience. We've added lots of features and updated others - and we hope that existing and new users alike will enjoy this next generation of orkut. To start using the new orkut, check out the get started section. See you there!

Given the large number of orkut users, we've decided to gradually roll out the new orkut through an invitation-only system for the next few months. Here's how to get an invitation, and what to expect when you do...

Get an invite, get started!
Want to see the new orkut now? Find a friend who has an invitation and ask him! Those who are using the new orkut will sometimes receive invitations to share with their friends, so they can share the orkut love.

Another way to get an invite is to join Poppy and Shashi on the official community for cool insights into the new orkut and to participate in one of the many activities that will be taking place there. Be sure to check back often as the owners will be regularly announcing new ways to get an invite.

Users must have an invitation before they can access the new version of orkut. If they have invitations to share, they can send them to their friends on orkut; when those friends receive the invitations, they'll see a special icon at the top of their homepage.

To accept the invitation, they just click the icon and they'll then see the new version of orkut. Once they've accepted the invitation, they'll be eligible to receive invitations that they can share with their friends on orkut... and that's how more and more people will be able to get on board the new version. To see how many invitations you have to share with friends, simply look below the friends box on your homepage.

Invite your friends
Are you already on the new orkut, and want your friends to join you? Well, orkut eventually will give you some invitations and you will have the power to invite your favorite friends. When that happens, look below the friends box for the counter that shows how many invitations you can share. Click "invite your friends" to see a list of your friends who aren't using the new orkut yet - then pick the friends you want to invite and click "send". If you don't see a specific friend in this list then your friend was already invited by someone else.

Get more invites
We'll periodically give you more invitations to share with friends. No need to ask - we'll keep an eye on the number of invitations you've sent, and give you a few more when you seem to need them.

Is this the same orkut my friends are still using?
Yes (sort of). You can still interact with all your friends who are using the old orkut, but you'll be seeing orkut in a whole new light. Both versions share the same information, so anything you do on one version of orkut will be visible to your friends on the other. You can even click at the top of the page to go back and forth between the two versions of orkut to be sure nothing got lost in translation. Or you can just trust us :)

Can't find an invitation, what do I do?
Hmmm, so you really want to see the new orkut? Well, the best way to get an invitation is to visit your friends profile pages. If you see this icon on their profile next to their name, they probably have an invitation they can share with others - so be bold, and ask them for one!

Want to invite someone who's not on orkut yet?
First, your friend needs to sign up for orkut. Simply use the friend finder "invite" feature and send a note inviting your friend to create an orkut account. Once your request is accepted, you'll see your pal on your friends list. Then, just send your new friend an invitation to try the new orkut.

Windows Phones Now Available in Stores Worldwide

On 6th Oct 2009 Microsoft unveiled a new generation of phones from leading manufacturers and mobile operators that offer an intuitive user interface, powerful Web browsing, and access to an online library of downloadable services and applications. Windows® phones — a new brand for phones running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system — are now available in retail stores worldwide in a broad range of styles and prices.

The new phones were shown at press events in New York, hosted by Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, and in Paris, where Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer showed off the new Windows phones. They also announced the availability of two key services platforms for the new phones: My Phone and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. My Phone is a free service that helps people back up and manage photos, applications and other content from their phone or PC, as well as restore information in the event of a lost phone. Windows Marketplace for Mobile is an online library of business and leisure mobile applications — as well as games — that customers can buy and download directly to their phones.

Windows phones are designed to keep people connected to their business e-mail, calendar and contacts, as well as helping people stay in touch with friends and family with voice, instant messaging, photo and video sharing and social networking.

The launch of the Windows phone brand signals a major evolution in the company’s mobile strategy from being purely a platform provider to delivering both a great platform and end-to-end experiences and choices through software and services, including a broad portfolio of applications and support from the developer community. The branding will also make it easier to find Windows phones in stores.

The new phones are available with a wide variety of styles and features, including full physical QWERTY keyboards, touch screens or both. Windows phones offer more choices of mobile operators and phone styles than any other mobile platform on the market. Manufacturers include Acer, HP, HTC Corp., LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Toshiba Corp.

The HTC Pure, for example, is engineered for one-hand use, and has a touch screen, a 5-megapixel camera, expandable memory and ambient-light sensor. The HTC Tilt 2 features a high-resolution, 3.6-inch widescreen display and full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, GPS technology, and gravity, proximity and ambient-light sensors. And the Samsung Intrepid features a slim design and full QWERTY keyboard, plus a touch screen for added flexibility, stereo Bluetooth wireless technology, a 3.0-megapixel camera and GPS technology.

A Single Phone for Work and Play

Windows phones offer the familiarity of Windows software, with mobile versions of Windows Live, Microsoft Office, Windows Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. People can access their work and personal e-mail accounts, surf the Web, look at a PowerPoint presentation, read a Word document or review an Excel spreadsheet.

The phones come with enhanced touch capabilities, including the ability to recognize a standard set of gestures, and Internet Explorer Mobile, a new, more PC-like browser that comes with Adobe Flash Lite support for better rendering and can log onto secure Web sites, so users can bank online or connect to their corporate networks.

With Windows Live on their phones, users can keep track of friends through Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or Windows Live. They can upload photos and videos taken with the phones to a Facebook or MySpace page, or have video chats with friends. And they can have access to all their e-mail accounts — Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo! mail, Gmail, Outlook Mobile and more — with auto updates so they don’t have to keep signing in to refresh.

My Phone and Marketplace

Microsoft is supporting the new phones with two new services. The first, Windows Marketplace for Mobile, is an online library of business and leisure mobile applications — as well as games — that customers can buy and download directly to their phones.

The second service, My Phone, lets people sync and back up information on their phones — such as contacts, appointments, messages, photos and videos — to a password-protected Web site. The free service is especially useful when a phone is lost, which happens 12 million times per year in the U.S., according to Microsoft surveys. My Phone premium service can ring the phone, even if it’s set to vibrate; show on a map where the phone was the last time it synchronized with the network; remotely lock the phone if it’s been stolen; and even remotely wipe the phone’s memory to protect personal data. If people need to replace the phone, My Phone can transfer to the new phone all the data that had been backed up from the lost phone.

People can personalize their Windows phones, outfitting them with apps and games from Windows Marketplace for Mobile. They can personalize the wallpaper on the home screen with their own photos and colors, or designs created by top designers such as Isaac Mizrahi, then further customize the home screen with widgets and plug-ins that show updates from their favorite Web services, tweets, sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather reports, etc.

Windows phones offer greater value, choice

Todd Peters, senior vice president for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Marketing Group, said the value of Windows phones lies in Microsoft’s ability to give people a great experience regardless of location or device. “We are deeply committed to the three-screens strategy (PC, phone, television) and to delivering great end-to-end experiences for consumers,” he said. “When you look at the assets we have – ranging from Zune to Xbox to Outlook to Internet Explorer – we’re providing people with elegant end-to-end experiences, and connecting them to things that matter the most to them.”

Peters added that Microsoft’s depth of consumer offerings positions the company to better serve customers. “When you look at the assets we have – ranging from Zune to Xbox to Outlook to Internet Explorer – we probably are best position to provide our end users with a seamless transition between their work life and their play life,” he said.

Microsoft worked extensively with phone manufacturers to make sure that phones were equipped to allow users to make the most of Windows Mobile technology. The company’s partners are expected to deliver more than 30 new phones in more than 20 countries by the end of the year, says Stephanie Ferguson, general manager of the Business Experiences Team in the Mobile Communications Business. “Not everyone wants the same model or the same service provider,” Ferguson says. “We give people choice.”

The Windows phones were unveiled by Bach during Microsoft’s Open House, a consumer media event held in Manhattan’s Seventh Regiment Armory, a massive, fortress-like brick structure built in 1879 and now home to a brigade of the New York Army National Guard. For the Open House, Microsoft created spaces throughout the Armory’s domed central hall that mirror various aspects of our lives, including a park-like setting complete with playground and treehouse. Attendees could try out the new phones and see for themselves how easy it is to multitask when you have the right tools.

“Our lives increasingly have become this complex mash-up of our professional and personal worlds, so we need a better way to connect to the people we care about and an easier way to connect to the information that matters to us,” Bach said during his welcome at the Open House.

Ballmer hosted a simultaneous event at Microsoft’s campus in the Paris suburb of Issy-Les-Moulineaux. “These phones are only the beginning of a stream of mobile innovations that will be coming from Microsoft and our partners,” he said. “Over the coming months you’ll see a regular drumbeat of exciting new devices from our partners and updates to our software to keep pace with evolving customer demands around browsing, touch and multi-touch capabilities, to name a few. So stay tuned.”

How to find out whether a gtalk ID is invisible?

I discovered a bug in Google Talk’s invisible status feature available in its Gmail Chat version and Gtalk Lab Edition version. If use smartly, you can figure out if some is avoiding you or really offline.
Here are steps:

1. Set the chat as off the record with target user (how?). This can be done only when the other user is online. (need help?)
2. Now try sending chat to that user when he is invisible or offline.
3. If he is invisible, then he will receive chat.
4. But if he Is offline, then you will receive error “ did not receive your chat”.

Explanation:

Point 1: When a chat is set off the record, it will no longer get stored in your Gmail account.

Point 2: When you send a chat message to offline or invisible user, it gets delivered by default. At receiving end if user is online, a chat screen pops up showing him your message. If he is offline, your chat message will go to inbox as a mail.

Now if you put together above points then you will notice that, when you set chat off the record it can’t be delivered to inbox as mail, so it will be delivered only if user is online (no matter if he is invisible).

Now the only tricky part is finding a user online for once to set chat off the records. This doesn’t seem hard as invisible status is still limited to Gmail version of Google Talk and you may be in luck if your friend uses Google Talk desktop clients/gadgets or third party IM client to chat.

Find email id of any orkut profile

Well here comes another orkut hack to find email id of any orkut profile. Note that old trick to send friend
request to view their email id on friends page is not working any more!Only thing it works for only orkut members who simultaneously use GoogleTalk. By GoogleTalk I mean you need to have GoogleTalk installed!

Here is the trick…

1. Go to any members profile who is not your friend. (Because you can always view your friends email id by going to friends page!)
2. Select ignore user option which is on left side.
3. Now log into GoogleTalk and go to Settings >> Blocked.
4. You will get all ignored peoples name and email id there!

Know more about Address bar of your Browser....

You are already familiar with quite a few browser address bar shortcuts. For instance, type some text in the address bar of your browser (e.g. apple) , press Ctrl + Enter and the browser will automatically send you to the corresponding .com website (in this case, www.apple.com).

Or type in some complex search query (e.g., site:firefox.com internet explorer) in the address bar, hit go and the browser will show results from your default search engine*. The address bar of Google Chrome is even smarter as it can offer live suggestions while you are typing the search query.

Other than these built-in shortcuts, you may also want to know about a couple of URL hacks (a better term would be “address bar commands“) that let you do stuff from the address bar itself - they are pretty easy to remember and don’t require you to install any bookmarklets or add-ons (so you can use them on any computer and even some mobile phones).

address

1. Capture a screenshot - Go to your browser’s address bar, type aviary.com before the http:// part of the URL and hit Enter. Aviary will immediately capture a full screenshot image of the web page that’s currently open in your browser - here’s an example.

2. Download videos - If you are like to download a YouTube video, just add deturl.com to the URL (see example) and you’ll be able to save the video in either Flash or Quicktime format. This is a pretty useful option for mobile phones that don’t support the flash player but can play Quicktime.

3. Shrink the address - There are about a million URL shortening services out there but if you want to quickly shrink the URL from the address bar itself, try this - just type bit.ly before the URL and it give you the short form on the next screen.

bitly

4. Email a web page - If you want to email a link of the current web page to a contact or to your own self, here’s a trick. Just type the mailto command in the address bar and this will compose a new message in your default email program - you can have the URL of the page in either the body of the message or in the subject line itself.

mailto:a@b.com?body=http://google.com/ (a@b.com is the email of your contact)

5. Share or bookmark a web page - If you find the above email command a bit scary, here’s something more simple. Go the address bar of your browser and type smub.it/ just before the URL as in this example. You can then share that page on any social site or even send the link to your friends via email. A perfect option for mobile phones.

6. Who owns that website - If you want to know the email address and other contact details of the owner of a site, the whois record of that site can sometimes help. To view the whois details of the current site, type whois.domaintools.com/ in the address bar (just before the http:// part) and there you have all the information - see example.

7. Send yourself notes - Futz.me is a free service that lets you email text notes, hyperlinks and even images from the right the address bar of your browser.
Go to the address bar, type futzme.com/xyz followed by a space (xyz is your unique username) and anything that’s after the space will be sent to your email address. If you use Futz.me with a URL that points to an image, the image will be sent you via an email attachment or even through MMS (if you are in the US). Thanks Veronica.

8. Mobile friendly web - If you are reading web pages on a mobile phone, you can easily convert the current page into a mobile friendly version by adding http://mopwn.com/ in front of the URL in your address bar as in this example. Internally, the mopwn service will simply forward your request to Google Transcoder but it’s still very handy.

First look: Google Earth's Desi rival.....BHUVAN

Google Earth's Indian rival is finally here! Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) took a leap into satellite imagery of geographical regions with the launch of `Bhuvan', India's mapping application website.http://www.bhuvan.nsrc.gov.in

Similar to Google Earth or Wikimapia, Bhuvan goes a step ahead. The application allows users to zoom far closer than the aerial view from a chopper.

Here's a peek into Google Earth's Indian competitor.

The application will allow users to have a closer look at any part of the subcontinent barring sensitive locations such as military and nuclear installations. The satellites can capture images of objects as small as a car on a road.

This would provide a user with images having resolution up to 10 m. The degree of resolution showcased is based on points of interest and popularity, but most of the Indian terrain is covered upto at least six meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters.

Like Google Earth, Bhuvan will allow users to view cities and other places of interest looking perpendicularly down or at an oblique angle, with different perspectives.

Bhuvan will be able to take much closer pictures of the Indian Subcontinent as compared to the Google Earth. Bhuvan will feature a zoom level of upto 10 meters while the Google Earth features a zoom level of up to 200 meters.

Bhuvan also features a multi-layer information mapping while the Google Earth features a single layer information mapping system.

Reports also reveal that Bhuvan will update map information every year, however, Google Earth reportedly updates its map information every 4 years.

Block Inappropriate Content on the Internet in Your Network without any Software

The Internet hosts billions of web pages but a large chunk of this material may be inappropriate for your young children. Therefore, let’s explore a couple of easy ways that can possibly help parents prevent kids from viewing the dark side of the world wide web.

You don’t have be a tech-savvy person to implement any of the following stuff on your home computer(s) and all the software tools / services discussed here are available for free via the Internet.

Block Adult Sites Automatically

Since you don’t want kids to accidentally see any of sites that contain adult content, an easy option for blocking such sites is OpenDNS.

You don’t have to download or install any software - just go to opendns.com/start in any Internet browser, choose the "Computer" option (let’s keep it simple) and follow the instructions on the screen. Once your computer is configured with OpenDNS, go to Dashboard -> Settings and set the Filtering level to either Moderate or High.

Now whenever your kid mistakenly types a URL of some adult site in the browser (e.g. whitehouse.com instead of whitehouse.gov) or clicks a link that may be pointing to an inappropriate site, the OpenDNS filters will match the address of that site against their own database of adults sites and if there’s a match, the underlying web page won’t be displayed on the child’s computer.

Google's new search engine, Caffeine

Google Inc is working on a new test version of its search engine, which the company claims will be faster and more relevant than ever before. The company has dubbed the new search engine "caffeine".

Look-wise, the new engine doesn't appear different, but its developers hope that the technology they have used will noticeably index new content faster.

Google engineers are said to have invited web developers to test the new search engine, and give their feedback. Matt Cutts, a principal engineer at Google, and Sitaram Iyer, a staff software engineer, have posted an entry on the company's webmaster central blog, appealing to developers to try the newly improved service and send them some feedback.

"For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google's web search. It's the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions," the Telegraph quoted them as having written on the blog.

"The new infrastructure sits "under the hood" of Google's search engine, which means that most users won't notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we're opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback," they said.

A Google spokesperson added: ""Google is always working on new technologies to improve the quality of our search services. We hope this new system will improve search in the areas of speed, accuracy, and comprehensiveness."

Martin McNulty, director of search marketing specialist, Trafficbroker, who has tried the new version, said: "Google's caffeine is undoubtedly faster, almost twice as fast at times. It's like a Google GTi. Caffeine may be 'under the hood' but with this noticeable injection of speed it won't remain under the radar for long. As for accuracy, it's hard to say at this early stage but Google is clearly upping its game by including real-time results and more breaking news, as well as updates from the likes of Facebook and Twitter."

Why SMS Messages Are Limited to 160 Characters Only?

Los Angeles Times has an article on why text messages are limited to 160 characters. Read the abstract below.

In 1985, Friedhelm Hillebrand of Bonn, Germany and a dozen others had been laying out the plans to standardize a technology that would allow cellphones to transmit and display text messages. Because of tight bandwidth constraints of the wireless networks at the time, each message would have to be as short as possible.

Hillebrand has conducted an informal study using his typewriter on how many characters are required on an average to express a sentence or question, by typing out random sentences and questions on a sheet of paper. He counted the number of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and spaces on the page, and came to a conclusion that each blurb ran on for a line or two and nearly always clocked in under 160 characters. That became the magic number which set the standard for one of text messaging.

Friedhelm Hillebrand was the chairman of the nonvoice services committee within the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). He pushed forward the group’s plans in 1986 and all the cellular carriers and mobile phones must support the short messaging service (SMS).

The committee took the assumption based on other two factors: For one, they found that postcards often contained fewer than 150 characters. Second, they analyzed a set of messages sent through Telex, a then-prevalent telegraphy network for business professionals. Despite not having a technical limitation, Telex transmissions were usually about the same length as postcards. The committee finally decided on the 160 character length for text messages.

Mobile Phone Numbers in India to Start With 8 and 95

The growth of mobile phone market in India has reached a stage that the department of telecommunications has exhausted cell phone numbers beginning with 9. Soon, mobile phone companies are expected to issue cell phone numbers beginning with 8.

Moreover, the 95 sub-level of telephone numbers was earlier reserved for trunk calls or STD dialling within a telecom circle. Now these numbers has begun to be alloted to cellular operators. The country’s cellular subscriber base has been growing substantially over the last couple of years, which led to the exhaustion of the existing sublevels of 9.

Accoding to TRAI, total 11.44 million telephone connections (Wireline and Wireless) have been added during May 2009, and the total number of telephone connections reaches 452.91 million at the end of May 2009. The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA & WLL(F)) base stood at 415.25 million at the end of May 2009. Total Broadband (= 256 Kbps download) subscribers base has reached 6.40 million by the end of May 2009.
